Set in the heart of France Giovanni's Room is a gripping novel by James Baldwin, in which protagonist David struggles with identity, sexuality and almost poverty as he and his lover Giovanni give and take of one another hiding in the secrecy Giovanni's dormitory style living quarters as David's fiance is away in Spain discovering if marriage is something she is ready for. Interesting characters, wildly interpretive symbolism and beautiful scenery tell a story of romance and tragedy. A five star read that I probably would have never encountered if it hadn't been required for my english 209 class.
